The castle of Platamon is a fortress-town of the middle Byzantine period (10th century A.D.). It lies at the south-east foot of mount Olympos, at a strategic position which controls the route leading from Macedonia to Thessaly and South Greece.

Excavations conducted in 1995 brought to light the traces of a Hellenistic fortification, dated to the 4th century B.C. This confirms the suggestion that the site of the castle was occupied by the ancient city of Herakleion, "the first city of Macedonia…" after the Tempe valley, according to an ancient literary source dated to 360 B.C. Habitation on the site continued until the 4th century A.D. The Byzantine wall was restored by the Franks after 1204 and again by the Byzantines in the 14th century. At the end of the 14th century the fortress was captured by the Turks and was again rebuilt but its inhabitants continued to be Christians. In the Second World War (1941) it was bombed by the German army.

I need a site for Christians that is about romance, dating, and sustaining a relationship. I’m not a Christian single – I just want godly guidance and support for the relationship I do have! Preferably not any sites geared toward teens – I want something more serious than that =) Any suggestions? Thanks!

The Church of Our Lady of the Snow (Matka Boska Śnieżna) and Convent of Dominican Sisters in Kraków are situated at Mikołajska and Na Gródku Streets.

The complex was built in the years 1632-34 for Dominican Sisters at the site known as Gródek, as a votive offering for the victory over Turks at Chocim in 1621. It was previously the site of a defensive mansion belonging to Voit Albert (13th/14th century), then a castle of King Ladislaus the Elbow-high, and the Tarnowski Palace in the 16th century.

Both the foundation of the convent and the dedication of the church to Our Lady of the Snow are not a matter of coincidence. Our Lady of the Snow was a patron saint of Christian chivalry fighting the infidels, and Stanisław Lubomirski, son of the founder Anna Lubomirska, was one of the victorious commanders of the Polish forces in the Battle of Chocim in the year 1621, when a Turkish army of nearly 100,000 soldiers, intending to cross the River Dniester and invade the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania, was defeated in spite of the fact that the joint Polish-Cossack troops amounted to only 40,000 men.

The Church is a Baroque hall building. The arched vault with telescopes is adorned with geometric stucco decoration. In the neo-Baroque main altar (1931) there is the allegedly miraculous painting of Our Lady of the Snow dating back to the 1st half of the 17th century sent by Pope Urban VIII. In the church there is a lavabo created most likely in the workshop of Bartolommeo Berrecci, Italian architect and sculptor (first half of the 16th century).
Next to the church there is a convent founded by Anna Lubomirska. It was built around a square viridary in the years 1627-32 at the site of the former Tarnowski Palace. On the Planty side the convent building leans on the former city wall with fragments of the Butcher’s Gate. The basement houses the remains of the 14th century Elbow-high’s castle.
